Phasis, derived from a proto-Imperial tongue long dead meaning “broad” or “plenty,” is the name of the continent jutting Westward into the Vast and is commonly applied to the Isles-il-Picti and the regions of Outremer, Cagethi, and Nebka as well. The entire region enjoys a temperate climate, with the regions from the Whitecap Mountains northward experiencing snow in the winter, and all regions experiencing relatively predictable patterns of wet and dry seasons.
The most ancient records show that Phasis was one of the last regions settled by humans, with the earliest civilizations growing out of the river valleys of Outremer. Eventually these civilizations splintered and spread until mankind had spread across all of Phasis, thriving in its temperate climate, abundant natural resources, and comparatively harmless fauna.
Although now generally regarded as the land of the Ilostrian Empire, numerous regions of Phasis are not and have never been controlled by humans. Orcs dominate the northern lands of Frosfjell while Gnomes, Kobolds, Lizardfolk, and other more exotic creatures inhabit the mysterious Isles-il-Picti. Though traditionally a holding of the Empire, Cagethi is now and has been controlled by Goblins for over two hundred years. East of there, Nebka is the millenia-old empire of the Elven peoples, who thrive on the abundance of the Iteru’s flood plains. Another traditionally Imperial region, Outremer, now plays host to the fearsome Taurogan Empire, a Hobgoblin-dominated nation of hobgoblins, goblins, bugbears, ogres, and other creatures led by the infamous general Taurog the Iron. North of Outremer, built into the Akkadian Mountains themselves, lies the Dwarven nation of Akkad: impenetrable, mysterious, devout, and rumored to be fabulously wealthy. Transoxania, while a holding of the Empire, is also the traditional homeland of the Halfling people. Finally, the Lost East, once an independent Human nation called Volgrad, now serves as the gateway to the devastated wastelands left behind centuries ago by the monstrous pestilence of the Golden Horde.
